Creating an article repository using Mendeley
Introduction
Over the course of the program you will be reading a variety of academic articles. I remember when I started my graduate program I would print off all of the articles and then highlight and make notes on the paper copy of the article as I read. That was all fine and dandy except for the fact that I had a hard time keeping all of the articles organized or searching the articles for specific things that I highlighted or notes that I kept. That all changed when I found Mendeley (is this sounding like an infomercial? It's not meant to be). With Mendeley I was able to highlight and take notes on articles digitally which also allowed me to search my notes quickly. Mendeley also automatically generates citation information which saves me a lot of time. The other nice thing was that I got to keep my account after I graduated so I didn't lose all of my work like I would have if I used a program owned by my university. The following video gives a brief (1:13) introduction to Mendeley and how it can help you in the program. |
Directions
You will need to create a free Mendeley account and install Mendeley on your computer. You can then start importing and annotating articles in future weeks. Below are two videos that would be helpful for you to watch.
Video 1 (the professionally done video)The following video will walk you through the process of downloading Mendeley and introduces you to some of the features. I would actually just watch up to 4:00. At that point they start talking about using the Word plug-in and I actually don't recommend using it.

Video 2 (My less than polished walkthrough)I created a video where I show you how I save and import articles into Mendeley. I also show you how I use Mendeley to create references. The video is a little on the longer side so this may be a good opportunity for you to try watching it at 1.5 or 2 times the speed--I won't be offended. This tutorial will show you how. I just learned this trick a couple of months ago and now I use it all the time--I highly recommend it.
